FRUITS: BEFORE OR AFTER MEALS?

Grandma says you should eat it after dinner, but your health-conscious friend insists fruits should be taken before meals. So, who’s right? Senior dietitian Wong Yuefen of the National Healthcare Group Polyclinics straightens it out and tells you more.
TAKE IT ANYTIME As long as you meet the requirement of two servings a day, you can eat them whenever you like, says Yuefen. Fruits are a healthy substitute for dessert. If you take them before your meal, the fibre in them fills you up and you’ll eat less later – which is a great way to watch your calories. Choose brightly coloured ones for the phytochemicals, which have been shown to prevent ailments such as cancer, stroke and heart disease.
